Give them a Boost
04-10-2011

It was a busy summer for more than 100 local young people.

They took part in the 2011 Summer Boost Programme, based at the Pembec High School site on Montrose Avenue in Wigan, which offered a huge range of vocational skills delivered by professional tutors. It was targeted at Year 11 school leavers who were eager to move on, learn new things and have some fun along the way.

Many received awards and achieved qualifications as a result of the summer-long programme. The subject areas included life and work skills such as DIY, construction, decorating, hospitality, hair and beauty, catering and sports.

Judith Bond, acting Headteacher at Pembec, said “It was fantastic to see the achievement of so many young people who completed the Summer Boost. It’s also been extremely pleasing to see how the young people have grown in confidence and now have a clearer direction on their career choices after the Summer Boost programme.”

Central Training UK worked in partnership with Wigan Local Authority to develop the Summer Boost programme. This allowed the young people an opportunity to work and learn at Central's new vocational training facility Pembec Park. The courses also acted as tasters of the many vocational programmes open to them this autumn.

Cllr Susan Loudon, cabinet champion for young people, says: “Congratulations to everyone on this. I’d like to thank the tutors and the organisers for sharing their skills – but mainly I’d like to wish all the youngsters well as they gain valuable material for their CV and their careers ahead.”
